Napa Valley Soccer Club History

Napa Valley has produced dozens of top notch youth players and teams over the years.

In the earlier days, the Napa Valley Pride Soccer Club was a loosely organized structure for competitive traveling teams. All training and administration was on a purely volunteer basis.

In 1997, the Napa Valley Soccer Club was re-organized. Our goal was set - to maximize player development. At that time we employed our first Director of Coaching and formalized our tryout and team formation process. Since the reorganization, NVSC fields 17 to 20 teams each season for competition in CYSA North Division 1 and Division 3 leagues and tournaments. As a program within the Napa Youth Soccer League (NYSL), the Club serves as a home for talented and dedicated youth soccer players to compete in competitive traveling (also known as select) soccer. The NVSC program is designed to provide opportunities for players to excel technically and tactically as individuals and within a team.

Teams are formed from the Under-10 age group up to the Under-19 age group. Players in the NVSC Premier U-10 program compete in a 5 vs. 5 game structure to maximize development of individual and small-group techniques and tactics. These young teams compete in local soccer jamborees and play a regular schedule of matches but do not travel for games or play in tournaments.

In the U-11 level and up, full 11-a-side teams are formed for league play and tournaments in both Division 1 and Division 3 competitive divisions.

The primary goal of the NVSC program is player development. To reach that goal, the Club has established these objectives:

  • Focus on players' technical and tactical development and implement and train skills specific to the age group
  • Minimize the attention on winning; focus on proper game execution of techniques and tactics
  • Encourage players individual decision-making and creativity
  • Plan and run practices in a way that maximize touches on the ball for each player
  • At younger age groups, allow each player to learn all positions
  • Do not specialize players in the goal keeper position until later years
  • Coach in practices and observe in matches with a minimum of instruction
  • Maximize fun in everything that is done
